Benefits for Volunteer Lawyers

CLE Credit For Pro Bono

Did you know that you can get CLE (Continuing Legal Education) credit for pro bono representation? For every 6 hours of pro bono you do through Legal Assistance of Dakota County (LADC), you can receive one CLE credit.

Pro Bono Malpractice Coverage

Our malpractice will back you up when you represent a client pro bono through LADC. We can also say that in the 40 years of our existence, there has never been a claim against any of our volunteers!

Free listing in the Attorney Referral Service

Legal Assistance also runs the attorney referral service for private practice attorneys who practice in any area of law in the county. Anyone who calls is given the names of several attorneys who practice in the area of law and in the geographic area needed. Depending on the area of practice, a listed lawyer may have been referred several calls a week from this source. The attorney set whatever fee is appropriate; callers are informed these referrals are not free or reduced fee lawyers. There is no requirement of a lowered first appointment cost or any other restriction. Lawyers pay $100 per year to be listed with this service; lawyers doing pro bono through LADC have that fee waived.

Become a NorthStar Lawyer

Members of the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) who provide free legal services to low income people can be recognized as a North Star Lawyer and be included on the annual roster published in Bench & Bar. They also will receive a certificate suitable for framing and will also be invited to a gala event honoring all the North Star Lawyers.
