We rely on volunteers to meet the critical legal needs of our community. There are many ways you can provide access to justice to our neighbors in crisis - from a few hours to full representation!
Volunteer attorneys can receive training, access to low cost CLEs, CLE credit for their services, and are eligible for the Dakota County Bar Association Lawyer Referral line. To learn more, contact admin@dakotalegal.org.
LADC places cases with volunteers for full-representation in a variety of civil legal service areas or on an emergency basis as part of our Order for Protection panel. Our staff will work with volunteers to match their interests and skills with appropriate clients and will provide individualized support, as necessary, throughout the representation.
LADC offers more than 15 legal advice and brief services clinics each month. Volunteers sign up for 2-3 hour shifts and virtually meet clients for 30 minutes each, answering questions and reviewing legal documents, primarily in the areas of family, consumer, and housing law.
You can provide written legal advice to specific legal questions as a LADC volunteer on Minnesota Legal Advice Online. Just list us as your organization when you sign up!
Volunteers can sign up for a set number of hours in our office, working on specific cases or administrative projects, or out of the office on research projects. This is a great way for new volunteers and less experienced attorneys to gain the legal skills they may need to take on full representation cases in the future.
Minnesota’s Legal Paraprofessional Pilot Project permits legal paraprofessionals, under the supervision of a Minnesota licensed attorney, to provide legal advice and, in some cases, represent a client in court in two legal areas: landlord-tenant disputes and family law disputes. If you are interested in helping us, please sign up today.
We also have externship opportunities for paralegal students. Contact us to learn more!
We believe that real world experience is an important part of legal education. From a few hours to an externship, we are happy to teach law students practical legal skills. To find opportunities, please contact us directly or look up our postings on the Minnesota Justice Foundation website!
Although LADC receives grants from state and local government, the First District and Dakota County Bar Associations, and local organizations like the United Way of Hastings and Thomson Reuters, we rely on private donations to make our budget and meet the evolving needs of our community.
